Opaspong’s Project 3
The Motherland: The North East
The North Eastern region of Thailand is known for its rich identity—diverse traditions, culture, cuisine, and ways of life.
When we think of this region, we inevitably think of natural indigo dyes, Mudmee silk patterns, and tie-dye techniques. But the question was: how could we bring all of these elements into a single piece of denim?
To achieve a denim pattern inspired by traditional Mudmee textiles, we applied a carefully designed tie-dye process. Every section was meticulously planned—calculating which areas would remain deep indigo and which would appear white—so that once woven, the fabric would reflect the intended pattern. It’s no surprise that this project took over three years of preparation. And now, it is finally ready for you to own.
Details of The North East:
- Unsanforized selvedge denim, 17.28 oz, with a silver selvedge ID. The warp yarn is dyed with high-quality Japanese indigo, while the weft yarn is dyed with natural indigo from Thailand.
- The yarns were dyed in Khon Kaen before being sent to Japan to be woven on traditional narrow shuttle looms.
- All buttons and rivets are made from solid silver, individually cast and hand-finished with precision.
- Blue horsehide leather patch, screen-printed and embossed with the brand logo.
- Waistband lining uses handwoven indigo-dyed Mudmee cotton with the “Saket Tham” pattern from Sakon Nakhon.
- Pocket bags are made from light blue chambray fabric, printed with patterns representing the unique identity of each region of Thailand.
- Stitching threads are dyed using volcanic soil mixed with Pradu tree bark, creating a distinctive natural tone, dyed in Buriram.
- Special edition white box designed like a book, telling the story of all four regions of Thailand, featuring images of the dyeing materials. The spine is stamped with “The Motherland” in blue foil.
All garments are cut and sewn in our own factory in Nonthaburi, backed by over 15 years of denim craftsmanship.
For Opaspong’s Project 3, we feel that we are no longer just making jeans. Every detail represents a challenge, a story, and a collaboration across all four regions of Thailand.
