Opaspong’s Project 3
The Motherland: The Central
The Central region of Thailand is the heart of the country, covering the Chao Phraya River basin and situated between the North, Northeast, and South. Beyond its geographical significance, it also serves as a cultural hub that brings together influences from all regions.
For The Central, we chose to use our own location as the place to dye the weft yarn using natural materials. We also incorporated soil from Tham Moo Suea (Tiger Cave) to dye the stitching threads, while our workshop became the creative ground for crafting this collection. This project took more than three years of preparation and is now ready for you to own.
Details of The Central:
- Unsanforized selvedge denim, 18.21 oz, with a silver selvedge ID. The warp yarn is dyed with high-quality Japanese indigo, while the weft yarn is dyed with natural dye from sappanwood. The weft yarn was dyed at Tham Moo Suea by Opaspong Thongnuch, the designer himself, before being sent to Japan to be woven on traditional narrow shuttle looms.
- All buttons and rivets are made from solid silver, individually cast and hand-finished with precision.
- Natural horsehide leather patch, screen-printed and embossed with the brand logo.
- Waistband lining uses traditional Pa Khao Ma fabric from Ratchaburi.
- Pocket bags are made from orange chambray fabric, printed with patterns representing the unique identity of each region of Thailand.
- Stitching threads are dyed using soil from the land where our factory is located—once a famous durian orchard in Nonthaburi.
- Special edition white box designed like a book, telling the story of all four regions of Thailand, featuring images of the dyeing materials. The spine is stamped with “The Motherland” in red foil.
All garments are cut and sewn in our own factory in Nonthaburi, backed by over 15 years of denim craftsmanship.
For Opaspong’s Project 3, we feel that we are no longer just making jeans. Every detail represents a challenge, a story, and a collaboration across all four regions of Thailand.
