Opaspong’s Project 3
The Motherland: The South
The Southern region of Thailand is defined by its seas, sandy beaches, sunlight, and mountains—an abundance of natural beauty paired with a rich and distinctive cultural identity. From language and local traditions to cuisine and ways of life, the South holds a unique charm unlike any other.
For this region, we drew inspiration from one of its most iconic ingredients—sator (stink beans). The pods of sator produce a natural dye in deep grey and brown tones, creating a uniquely beautiful and organic color palette.
This project took more than three years of preparation and is now ready for you to own.
Details of The South:
- Unsanforized selvedge denim, 17.68 oz, with a silver selvedge ID. The warp yarn is dyed with high-quality Japanese indigo, while the weft yarn is dyed with natural dye from sator pods. The dyeing process took place in Nakhon Si Thammarat before being sent to Japan to be woven on traditional narrow shuttle looms.
- All buttons and rivets are made from solid silver, individually cast and hand-finished with precision.
- Cognac-colored horsehide leather patch, screen-printed and embossed with a special edition logo.
- Waistband lining uses vintage-pattern batik fabric, a heritage design dating back to the reign of King Rama V, dyed with natural colors from sator pods, look niang, and kradon tree bark from Phatthalung.
- Pocket bags are made from light brown chambray fabric, printed with patterns representing the unique identity of each region of Thailand.
- Stitching threads are dyed with natural soil from cave-front earth in Yala, creating a distinctive organic tone.
- Special edition white box designed like a book, telling the story of all four regions of Thailand, featuring images of the dyeing materials. The spine is stamped with “The Motherland” in platinum brown foil.
All garments are cut and sewn in our own factory in Nonthaburi, backed by over 15 years of denim craftsmanship.
For Opaspong’s Project 3, we feel that we are no longer just making jeans. Every detail represents a challenge, a story, and a collaboration across all four regions of Thailand.
